In honor of Memorial Day, Henry Ostaszewski, founder of Blue 42 Market, is hosting a family-friendly community open house and meet-and-greet with John Slemp, author and
photographer of “Bomber Boys: WWII Flight Jacket Art.” This remarkable book pays tribute to the history, craftsmanship, and cultural legacy of the iconic WWII A-2 flight jacket and the courageous crew who wore them.
While scouting locations in the area with a fellow creative, John
stopped into Blue 42 Market for lunch after seeing the Emmy award-winning Dahlonega segment featured on the popular television series “Fork in the Road,” hosted by David Zelski.
Henry welcomed them warmly and struck up a conversation. During their visit, John shared the story behind what became an eight-year passion project documenting these iconic WWII bomber jackets and preserving the powerful stories of the people who wore them.
“Over time, the stories behind the jackets began to emerge — stories of extraordinary courage,
sacrifice, resilience, and unwavering dedication during one of the most defining periods in American history,” says John. “While the jackets themselves featured vivid artwork and deeply personal expression, they only hinted at the realities these men and women faced while serving their country during World War II.
Having served more than a decade in the Army, I felt a profound responsibility to help preserve and share these stories — not only to honor the veterans who lived them, but to inspire younger generations to better understand the character, commitment, and sacrifice that helped shape our nation. If we can keep these stories alive, we can continue building respect, gratitude, and connection across generations.”
Guests are invited to experience these powerful stories firsthand and gain a deeper appreciation for the legacy, sacrifice, and enduring spirit of the generation that helped shape America.
