Theater and Performing Arts Events
Dahlonega has a strong arts community and the center of the performing arts in North Georgia is the Historic Holly Theater. The Holly was built at a movie house in the 1940s, struggled through the 1970s and 80s, saved from the wrecking ball by the community in the early 1990s. Today it is recognized as one of the top community theaters in the Southeast. The main stage season features mostly modern and classic musicals such as The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Shrek the Musical, White Christmas, The Sound of Music, Oklahoma!, SPAMALOT, Mamma Mia, Bright Star, and The Wizard of Oz with over 100 high-quality productions to date. Season ticket holders come from surrounding states to experience the Historic Holly. The Holly also has a well-known Children’s Theatre program of productions, camps, and classes. Actors that have graced the Holly stage have gone on to perform on Broadway, National Tours and found careers in theatre education. See www.hollytheater.com.
The local Lumpkin County School System is also well known for their drama department, which has sent many actors and theatre techs to the Holly and other venues in the region plus college theatre departments around the USA (see here).
