Your Guide to Spending Festive Friday in Dahlonega
When the last slice of Thanksgiving pie is gone and holiday music starts to hum through the air, Dahlonega, Georgia, flips the switch... literally.
The Historical downtown square bursts into twinkling light, kicking off one of the most charming traditions: Festive Friday and the start of Old-Fashioned Christmas in Dahlonega.
If you’ve ever dreamed of stepping into a real-life hallmark movie, this is your weekend. Here’s how to make the most of every moment, from the lighting of the tree and square, Santa sightings, carriage rides, and small-town sparkle that makes Dahlonega shine.
Friday, November 28th – The Lighting of the Square & Tree
The magic officially begins on Friday, November 28th! Before the lighting, enjoy live holiday music from the Visitor Center Balcony while wandering the square, taking in the festive decorations, and grabbing a warm drink from a nearby café.
3:30 PM – Roads close, the town begins to bustle
Expect some holiday traffic: road closures and detours start at 3:30 PM. Think of it as your official “entering Christmas mode” cue. Grab a cup of cocoa (or coffee) and start wandering the Historic Downtown Square.
6:00 PM – Cue the sparkle!
The moment you’ve been waiting for: The Historic Square and Christmas Tree light up! Cheer, clap, hug a friend (or stranger... it’s Christmas!), and don’t forget to snap a photo with Santa.
7:00 PM – Concert in the Park
After the tree lighting, head to Hancock Park for a festive Concert in the Park. Enjoy live music as the beautifully decorated Festival of Trees surrounds you.
Bring a blanket (or chair), grab a bite to eat from the food trucks, and enjoy the music!
Pro tip: Lights stay up Through January 6th, so even if you can’t make Friday night, the square is still magical any day of the season.
Saturday, November 29th
The festivities roll into Saturday as Dahlonega comes alive with more holiday fun! From the Christmas market to Santa visits, carriage rides, and holiday shopping, the magic of the season fills every corner.
10:00 AM – Christmas Art Market
Kick off your morning by grabbing breakfast and a delicious seasonal drink from one of downtown’s cozy cafes before heading to the Christmas Art Market. Local artists and makers fill Hancock Park with handcrafted gifts and festive decor. It’s the perfect way to kick off a day of holiday fun!
Christmas Tea at Waffle’s English Tea Room
Make your afternoon extra special with Christmas Tea at Waffle’s English Tea Room. Seatings are offered at 11:00 am and 1:30 am, and reservations are required. Can’t make it to tea this weekend? No worries, Christmas Tea runs throughout the whole month of December, so you can enjoy this experience all season long!
Santa Visits & Carriage Rides
As the day goes on, the square fills with laughter and Christmas spirit. Stop by to visit Santa or take a carriage ride through the festive downtown streets!
Movie in the Park
