Dahlonega/Lumpkin County saw significant gains in tourism and travel in 2005. A growth rate of 17% (extrapolated number) in the visitors segment contributed significantly to the overall financial health of the area. The tourism factor also indicated another important observation as well. The business traveler made up a much larger portion of the Tourism income than previously experienced. This trend coupled with explosive retail growth in the area is a precursor for a wave of new business openings in 2006 most of which will be large retailers that are testing the waters in NE Georgia for the first time. The real question for us is what impact these openings will have on existing businesses and if in fact they will bring net capital to the area. Other contributors to the economy have been several industrial expansions that will mean a net gain of about 100 jobs for our community in the first quarter of 2006.
