In 1971 three University of Georgia landscape architecture students had an idea for their senior project. Alan Blalock, Donald Canupp and John Ransom did an extensive study on the revitalization of the downtown square area of Dahlonega.
With total approval of the Dahlonega Restoration Commission along with the city council, merchants and chamber of commerce the students dream became a reality in April of that year.
The State Highway Department agreed to complete new curbing and rerouting of traffic in the downtown area. Georgia power and Standard Telephone were asked to rewire public utilities underground giving the square more of an 1800's look. All storefronts changed their appearance fitting to that same era. Trees and shrubs were planted by cooperating service organizations. Every detail even down to specially designed garbage receptacles were strategically placed about the "new" square area.
In a matter of several months the revitalization transformed the downtown into a pedestrian-oriented shopping area stimulating the economy from a local and tourist standpoint. Early in the 1990's the brick sidewalks were again improved after tree roots had grown making some areas a danger to walk over. Also, handicap ramps were added according to government standards.
The senior project by three students a long time ago helped to give the square it's charm and appeal. Tens of thousands visit yearly to see the results of something that, at one time, was a dream...
