Max Burns is the Associate Dean of the Mike Cottrell School of Business at NGCSU. Max received a BIE from Georgia Tech and a Masters and Ph.D. from Georgia State.  

Max was a member of the faculty at Georgia Southern until his election to Congress in 2003.  Max served in the 108th Congress and was President of the Freshman Class.

I’m a Lumpkin County native and a 1983 graduate from Lumpkin County High School.  I then attended The University of Tennessee, in Knoxville, TN, earning a BS in Industrial Engineering. After college, I worked with Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Corp. until 1993, when I took a several month hiatus to “thru-hike” the Appalachian Trail, from Maine back to Georgia.

My husband and I moved from Montana in September, 2006. Prior to returning to my native southern heritage, I spent 14 years in Montana hunting, fishing, camping, hiking Glacier National Park, cross country skiing, organic gardening, and spent 5 glorious years with my parents before they passed on. My parents taught me the necessity for hard work and to do my best in anything I do.

I was born and raised in Denver and went to school at the University of Colorado. After working two years in the oil and gas industry I moved to Georgia to be near a boyfriend. This seemed to have worked out since we have now been married almost twenty-two years. We settled in Atlanta where I worked in commercial printing for fifteen years.

I have worn many hats: factory worker, soldier, social worker, admissions officer, several others, and now elections supervisor. I enjoyed and loathed them all. I am told that is life.

I graduated high school with honors, however, college was unaffordable. So, I joined the military because physical labor was no stranger, no drill sergeant could compare to my father and I would learn skills while earning a way to college – plus I could leave Lumpkin County – perfect.

I was born June 4, 1971 in Marietta, GA. I am married to Joy and together we have two children, Kate, 6 and Luke, 5. Joy is a teacher at Long Branch Elementary where both kids attend. 

In the fall of 2007, I accepted an administrative position at Lumpkin County High School. I soon fell in love with Dahlonega and its surrounding area.

A native of Chatsworth, Georgia, I have lived in Dahlonega for eight years. In June of 2006, I retired from a 31-year career of teaching high school and college English. I taught in eight different school systems all over Georgia and have lived in the following cities: Athens, Hamilton, Buena Vista, Baxley, Valdosta, Statesboro, Douglas, and Richmond Hill. My last
