Gold in the Arts |
|
|
|
There is an exciting new Gold Rush in Dahlonega in the performing and visual arts. Bluegrass and mountain music remain staples in the community. Musicians often congregate for impromptu picking and singing. You can hear a variety of music styles live each weekend at venues on the historic Public Square. The Arts scene isn't limited to just music, though. Live theater thrives in the Historic District and there is an abundance of artistic talent in the surrounding mountains. The works of many local and regional artists and crafters—in every medium imaginable—can be found in and around Dahlonega. There are a number of interesting studios, galleries and even restaurants on the Public Square which showcase these works regularly, and several annual events invite local residents and visitors to tour the artists’ studios and to watch the artists at work against the backdrop of the charming historic square. Unassuming studios and galleries dot the countryside.

The Holly Theatre |

Home to one of Georgia's top theater companies the theatre’s outstanding performances, from the main stage to dinner theatre, sell out regularly to audiences who travel routinely from “the city” to incorporate a live show into their weekend B&B or cabin plans. The Mountain Music and Medicine Show |
|
|
|
Originating at the Historic Holly Theatre in Dahlonega, Georgia, the MOUNTAIN MUSIC & MEDICINE
SHOW has won three GABBY awards from the Georgia Association of
Broadcasters for the best locally produced program in the State of
Georgia. Amazing, especially consideringthat the MMMS is an all
volunteer effort. The setting is Dahlonega from Gold Rush days of the
early 1800s to modern times of the early 1950s---?
Doc Johnson's traveling Miracle Medicine Show has come to town and
set up on the Square in front of Nix's Store, the hub of local
commerce and social center of the area. Doc brings musical acts of the
time with him as well as his own brand of humor while he exhorts folks
to buy his"Wizard Water" elixir for improving their lives.
He also showcases local talent on his show. Folks come from all around
to hear the music & Doc. His fast-paced style and rapport with the
crowd keeps toes a-tapping and things moving briskly along. The scene
occasionally shifts to "street scene " short skits where
local people comment on the goings on of the day, mixing local
history, culture and humor in the unique Southern Appalachian style of
the time period. This is all presented in a live old-time Radio
broadcast; sort of like going back in time without leaving your living
room! You can be a
part of the live audience.

The Crimson Moon Cafe |
|
|
Known as “the southeast’s most intimate music venue,” The Crimson Moon Cafe is housed in the nationally registered c. 1858 Parker-Nix Storehouse (the second oldest commercial building in Dahlonega) and offers an intimate ‘dinner theatre’ style entertainment experience in a 75 seat venue where every seat has a great view of the stage. Its inclusion on the New York - New Orleans - Nashville entertainment circuit enables the offering of live acoustic performances from the best of the nation’s touring songwriters and solo artists to the some of the nation’s finest Blue Grass, Celtic, Contemporary/World Folk, Blues, Pop, Folk-Rock, Country, Rockabilly, and Acoustic-Alternative bands. In addition, every Sunday afternoon, an old fashioned ‘pickin & grinnin’ music jam continues a 90 year old tradition where guitars, banjos, fiddles & harmony help carry traditional tunes on to the next generation of music makers!
From the newly expanded kitchen, Chef Kelly Finucan, who has received a number of rave reviews for her ‘artistic cuisine’ (including Southern Living Magazine), presents a menu featuring a ‘nouveau Southern’ entrée selection along with an eclectic mix of hearty soups, salads, sandwiches, and delicious desserts – all homemade at ‘The Moon,’ with lots of vegetarian/heart healthy offerings. The café/coffee house is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner six days a week, with a generous select ion of beer and wine and old fashioned sodas as well as the traditional ‘coffee house’ offerings of espresso, coffee, tea and smoothies - all organic of course!
A variety of seating options are available both upstairs and down at ‘The Moon’ – including espresso/wine bar seating downstairs as well as private dining rooms and a New Orleans style porch ‘fresh air’ seating upstairs – one of the best places in Dahlonega to watch ‘the historic Public Square’ go by! Three Sisters Vineyards Winery |
|
|
|
Three Sisters Vineyards & Winery is a small family farm situated on a hundred and eighty acres in the heart of the Frogtown District in historic Lumpkin County, Georgia. Located eight miles northeast of the site of the first major US gold rush, Dahlonega, the farm's name was inspired by the property's spectacular view of Lumpkin County's Three Sisters Mountain. While no one knows the origin of the name of Three Sisters Mountain, local residents refer to its three distinctive peaks as Wild Cat, McBrayer, and Rattlesnake. Established in 1996 and bonded in 2000, Three Sisters Vineyards holds the distinction of being "Dahlonega's First Family Farm Winery."

Wolf Mountain Vineyards and Winery |
|
|
|
The Vineyard:
Our 25 acre Vineyard estate is home to plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Mourvedre, and Touriga Nacional. This mountain top estate was selected after an extensive search. We focused on finding the best site in which red wine grapes could be grown, instead of looking at the number of vines we could plant. Wolf Mountain has 5000 vines planted by hand which are divided into small vineyard lots. The property runs due east to west with south facing slopes. This maximizes sun exposure to vines and clusters, producing the ripest fruit possible. Our 1800 foot elevation provides sun soaked days and cool mountain nights, creating the perfect grape growing environment. After all, wine is really made in the vineyard.
The Lodge: The beautiful Winery at Wolf Mountain is fashioned after a raised, Craftsman-Style cottage and sits atop the cellar which is encased in fieldstone and houses a presentation of early wine-making artifacts. The Lodge represents our hospitality facility for private events and special activities. Currently, no overnight accommodations are available.
Old world rustic decor:
The decor at Wolf Mountain takes you back to the early French wine country. European antiques from the 17th and 18th centuries have been collected and are displayed throughout the winery.
Views of Mountain beauty
Situated atop a mountain ridge and surrounded by vineyards, The Winery at Wolf Mountain commands a spectacular view of the rolling foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.
